What is the project?

The EcoTransFlux™ project will demonstrate that one of the new technologies now available for heating steel in the cold rolling process, the High Power Transverse Flux Induction Heating is now mature and can be installed in new processing lines.

The project addresses an European capacity of about 60 millions tons per year (tpy) (about: 50 millions tpy, for carbon steel and 9 millions tpy, for stainless steel).

The demonstration will position EcoTransFlux™ inductor as a powerful and innovative technology, mature in terms of industrial risks and capable of offering its full potential benefits for both technical and environmental aspects.

What are the EcoTransFlux™ benefits in terms of environment?

In the stainless steel industry

Cold rolling plants traditionally include treatments of the strip on Cold Annealing and Pickling Lines (CAPL) which are by nature highly polluting processes.

With the introduction of EcoTransFlux ™ innovation, a 20% substitution of the above mentioned processing lines by new lines called Induction Bright Annealing Line (iBAL) and including the innovative inductors will save:

  • Effluents: sludge and acid wastes (expected acid consumption saved 12,000 tpy HNO3, 4,000 tpy HF)

  • Gas emissions CO2 (50,000 tpy), fumes generating acid rains (HF and NOX emissions)

In the carbon steel industry

The environmental benefits of Transverse Flux Induction Heating in the carbon steel industry lies in the ability to manufacture better performing steels with quick new heating cycles.

The manufacturers could therefore work on new and technologically-advanced metallurgical products. The weight of steel for a given application could be reduced and CO2 (75,000 tpy) emissions associated with the steel production are therefore saved.

Relevance within the European environmental policies

The EcoTransFlux ™ project is fully in accordance with several EU environmental policies:

European Union Flag

  • Kyoto and post Kyoto protocol: EcoTransFlux™ process offers a technological alternative to traditional processes that mainly use natural gas as energy source. Electricity is produced from various sources (fossil fuels, nuclear, renewable energy sources,) but it is expected that the share of European electricity produced from RES will increase in the next years.

  • ETAP (Environmental Technologies Action Plan): ETAP puts forward actions to attract more private and public investment for the development and demonstration of environmental technologies in line with the EU objective of 3% of GDP for research. The actions aim at improving the innovation process. Our project participates in the promotion of eco-environmental technologies thanks to its impact on CO2 reduction and waste reduction compared to traditional processes.

  • European Directive on Air Quality: Replacement of natural gas as energy source will avoid emissions of NOx, SOx and particles compared to traditional processes.

  • REACH Directive on chemicals: Environmental and health impacts of chemicals have led the European Union to propose a specific directive listing the chemicals in Europe and to promote replacement of the most dangerous ones. EcoTransFlux ™ process will avoid using acids as fluohydric acid and nitric acid used in traditional processes.
